MANILA, June 15 — Social Welfare Secretary Judy Taguiwalo has announced that her department will distribute the PHP1,000 cash assistance for each displaced family from Marawi City on June 23-24.
In a news release issued Thursday, Taguiwalo said families from Marawi City who are staying in evacuation centers and those staying with relatives and friends in Iligan City and other nearby towns, validated as of June 15, will receive the cash aid.
She said Muslim families could use the fund to purchase food for their breaking of the fast on the eve of June 26, the end of Ramadan.
The cash assistance is part of the PHP5,000 that the social welfare department will provide to each displaced family from Marawi City, aside from the regular family food packs given to them.
“The remaining PHP4,000 will be released to each family when it is already safe for them to return to Marawi. We are also preparing other actions to help them when they resume their lives in their communities. Other department programs will be made accessible to them,” Taguiwalo said.
As of June 15, the total number of people affected by the Marawi crisis has reached 69,055 families or 336,783 individuals.
Of the total, 3,527 families or 16,981 persons are taking shelter in 82 evacuation centers, while 59,712 families or 291,003 individuals are staying with relatives or friends in Central Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Davao, Soccsksargen, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, and the Negros islands.
Meanwhile, Northern Mindanao’s social welfare office recorded the highest number of displaced people, amounting to 2,402 families or 11,102 persons. (DSWD-PR)#DEFENDREPUBLIC
